James B. Cleghorn

HUBERT - James Bibb Cleghorn, MyGySgt (Ret), 89, of Hubert, passed away March 1, 2018 at home. James (Jimmy) was born November 4, 1928 in Atmore, AL to John Earl Cleghorn and Jessie Jeanette Lowry Cleghorn. In May 1951, while a young Marine, lovely 18-year-old Margaret Ann Allen caught his eye at Roses Dime Store in Farmville where she was employed. They married in Dillon, S.C., on December 22, 1951 and were together in love for 66 years until her death in September 2017.
James is survived by his daughter, Cynthia (William) Woolfolk of Jacksonville; his son Bill (Nancy) Cleghorn of Jacksonville; and four grandsons: Lance (Jenae) Cleghorn of Odenton, Maryland; Bill(y) (Kathleen) Woolfolk of Jacksonville; Joseph Woolfolk of Cambridge, England; and Garland “Jon” (Liesa) Woolfolk of Fayetteville.
James retired from the Marine Corps as a Master Gunnery Sergeant following 26 years of honorable service. He then went on to be the first supervisor at the "new" helicopter flight simulator aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River (mid 1970's) helping to establish the program until his second retirement in 1990.
A more mild mannered gentleman you would not meet. He always impressed with his demeanor and bearing, no doubt a result of his tour as a Drill Instructor at Parris Island, SC.
James had a brilliant mind and was an inventor. He was always working on a project and researching with his state of the art computers. He intensely studied and meditated on the bible for revelation and conducted weekly family bible studies.
James faced death with no fear and knew where he was going. There is no doubt he has found the answers to all the big questions.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a graveside service, with military honors, for James on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at 12:00pm at the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. Immediately following, the family and friends will gather at Golden Corral, 2055 N. Marine Blvd, in Jacksonville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401; or the Child Advocacy Center of Onslow County, 900 Dennis Road, Jacksonville, NC 28546.
