William Franklyn "Bill" Deaton, Jr.



Swansboro- USMC GySgt (Retired) William Franklyn “Bill” Deaton, Jr., 80, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at the Camp Lejeune Naval Hospital. He was born August 6, 1937 in Clarendon, AR son of the late, William Franklyn Deaton, Sr. and Lena Mae Clark Deaton.
A memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Jones Funeral Home of Swansboro. The family will receive friends Friday at the funeral home from 6-8 PM.
Bill retired from military service with the rank of GySgt in 1975 and then began his second career in law enforcement. Bill worked as a Swansboro police officer until 1979 when he moved to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department working as a detective until 1986. He returned to Swansboro serving as police chief until small town politics and his love for being in the middle of the action led him back to Jacksonville where he joined the JPD.
Bill remained in Swansboro after retiring from the military when he married a hometown girl. Early on, Bill and Joan spent many hours with friends enjoying the sand and the sea. Throughout his life Bill shared his love of the water with his children and friends. His later years were spent amongst friends sharing stories, advice, vegetables from his garden, or a “mess” of fresh fish.
He is survived by wife, Joan Deaton of the home; daughter, Stacie Friebel (Ross) of Swansboro; son William Franklyn Deaton, III (Christiane) of Kill Devil Hills; grandchildren, Turner Haut, Kamryn Haut, and William Neil Deaton; many nieces, nephews, and special friends.
He was preceded in death by stepmother, Ethel Deaton; grandson, Wallace Franklyn Deaton; sister, Betty Berry; brothers, Gene Laxson and Billy Joe Samuel.
