Gladys Sugrue Gowan



Cape Carteret- Gladys Sugrue Gowan, 87, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at her residence. She was born August 17, 1929 in Mamaroneck, NY daughter of the late, James and Florence Jones Sugrue.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 AM Friday March 3, 2017 at St. Mildred Catholic Church in Swansboro, NC with Father Don Baribeau officiating. Inurnment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the graveside service at the church.
Gladys was a 1947 graduate of Mamaroneck High School, and attended Berkeley Secretarial School. She was employed by J. Walter Thompson in NYC, subsequently worked as a secretary at Fort Slocum and later for the Veterans Administration, retiring after 18 years of service to the US Government. She was married on April 14, 1951 at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church to Gerald David Gowan who preceded her in death in January of 2014 after 63 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Senior Master Sargent Christopher Edward Gowan, USAF and sister, Joan Dalton.
Gladys and Gerald retired to Cape Carteret, NC where they shared an active life in the community. Gladys was a member of the St. Mildred’s Women Guild, The Garden Club, Sir Issac Walton, the Domino Group, and the Birthday Lunch Club, all the while keeping a beautiful home and nurturing many friendships.
She is survived by daughter, Elizabeth Gowan-Berliner of Great Barrington, MA; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Joseph Michael Martin of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Jovelyn Irizari, Christine Gowan, Aaron J. Berliner, Carmen Berliner, Erica Gowan, and Alex Berliner; great grandchildren, Caiden Ammons and Malaya Coffey. She is also survived by nieces, Sally Scully Brooks, Anne Wood, and Heather Steinmetz; nephew, Spencer Martin.
